Merging Catholic Boards With Non-Catholic Boards
Catholic school boards have had many opportunities to change. They choose not to. For example, in January 2023, the publisher of the Fully Alive textbook backed out of publishing it because of its homophobic and transphobic content. That was an opportunity for Catholic boards to change the homophobic and transphobic parts of the Catholic Family Life Education curriculum. Instead, late in 2023, Catholic boards released an updated curriculum which similarly, by choice, included homophobic and transphobic parts.
The best solution for a Catholic school system that will not stop harming Ontario's children is to merge Catholic public boards with non-Catholic boards. Some who propose this refer to it as "abolishing," "defunding," or "ending" Catholic school boards. What is meant is to keep them public by merging them with non-Catholic boards. For example, in Halton Region, the Halton Catholic District School Board would be merged with the Halton District School Board.
