The Curriculum
STRAND C TEACHES
HOMOPHOBIA & TRANSPHOBIA
from Grade 1 to Grade 8
The Institute for Catholic Education in Ontario (ICE Ontario), whose partners include the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario (ACBO) and the Ontario Elementary Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA), is the author of the Grades 1-8 Family Life Education curriculum policy document. There are 5 strands for each grade. Strand C (Created Sexual: Male and Female) of the Family Life Education curriculum policy document teaches what we would recognize as homophobia and transphobia in public spaces in Ontario, teaching, for example, the Catholic teachings that any romantic love outside of a male-female married couple is unacceptable, it is unnatural not to be heterosexual, and one must identify as male or female according to the gender (only male or female) as identified at birth.
Below are links to help you see how the overall and specific learning expectations in the Family Life Education curriculum policy document, in Grades 1-8, teach what we would recognize as homophobia and transphobia in Ontario.
